Which, for me, felt like they were really keen on dissecting Tennis Courts and then with their notes, completely built up something from scratch. Diplo was doing stuff with his remixes (like the Beyonce one) but those still felt like good remixes vs completely new things.Īnd then after that perception was broken people, started aiming for what the remix was doing. Tennis Courts was the first primarily electronic song that utilized really clean pop vocals in a way that kept the original song’s feel while making it something new. they were all combining pop with electronic music, but those all felt like pop-centric takes as opposed to electronic-centric takes. The combination of mainstream pop vocals (Lorde was HUGE at the time) with side-stage/underground wonky electronic music was experimented with, but never quite left an impact.
When this song came out, it took the original song and flipped it on its head and made it something new. Sometimes remixes could really change the identity or the perception of a song, but the main “song” was still front and center. They were cool little edits of songs with some added sounds. Years later, you can hear Chainsmokers on regular pop radio stations (like KSSK).įor me, the Flume song represented a truly significant shift in music. They go on to be *huuuuuuuuuge* mainstream successes. The Chainsmokers who were previously known for their house remixes start doubling down on their success in “Future Bass.” In 2015, Roses by The Chainsmokers is released and it becomes one of their first big hits with mainstream appeal.
Shortly after, people start producing music to fill this new category. Soon after (2014-16) Other people start copying the sound (or are highly inspired/influenced by it).īlogs need a word to catalog all this music coming out that wasn’t simply “flume-like.”
